Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District
After two successful seasons during which the Hexagon Ensemble and Carol Linssen performed the program "Entretiens avec Francis Poulenc" twenty-five times, we now offer the multidisciplinary program "Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District" for the season 2011-2012. Lyrically Macabre "Lady Macbeth" Bassoon player Kees Olthuis arranged the Shostakovich opera for the five wind players and pianist of the superb Hexagon Ensemble. The music consists of overwhelming, bleak passages that are played in between the scenes, which themselves are executed with a minimum of theatrical attributes. The music-theatrical drama, which lasts one and a half hour, is wholesome, the occasional pastoral passages, the morbid humour and the melancholy in the text accentuate the misery even more. - Kasper Jansen, NRC Handelsblad Piercing adaption of a bloodcurdling tale. In collaboration with the actors of this opera, the Hexagon Ensemble has created a piercing chamber music performance. Using a minimum of theatrical attributes they have acquired the maximum level of expression. - PZC/BN De Stem Restored to its essence: a tale - in an intricate and lyrical translation - with a musical arrangement by Kees Olthuis. Carol Linssen and Christine Ewert are two experienced actors and that is clearly noticeable. Every single word can be distinctly understood. The music in this small arrangement is entirely convincing. - De Stentor Read more about this program here View a photo impression of the performance here Watch here a video preview of the program

New CD: The Dutch Connection: from Utrechtsch Sextet to Hexagon Ensemble The sextet consisting of five wind instruments and piano is a colourful combination that has inspired many composers. In the 1920s there were even two professional wind sextets in the Netherlands: the Utrechtsch Sextet and the Concertgebouw Sextet. Besides these sextets, there was an even larger number of wind quintets in the Netherlands. Often these ensembles were made up of first-desk wind players from symphony orchestras. The best known Dutch wind quintet is the Danzi Quintet, an ensemble that from the 1950s held a prominent place in Dutch music life for a long time. Some of these wind quintets were regularly augmented with a pianist in order to play sextets. The Dutch Connection is a tribute by the Hexagon Ensemble to the Dutch composers who have written sextets, as well as to the ensemble’s predecessors who performed the works.
This cd is the fifth en last one in the series of Connection cd’s. About this CD | Listen | Our other CDs |
